What are PFAS and why are they a problem?

PFAS (Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances) are synthetic chemicals that were once prized for their exceptional resistance to heat, water, and oil. These properties made them widely used in countless applications ranging from consumer products to industrial lubricants. But PFAS are now under intense scrutiny and have become a global environmental and public health concern.

Why is PFAS contamination such a global concern?

PFAS are extremely persistent in the environment. Unlike most substances, they do not degrade naturally. Over time, they accumulate in soil, water systems, and even in the human body. Scientific studies have linked certain PFAS compounds to a range of health risks, including hormonal disruption, immune system suppression, liver damage, and increased risk of some cancers.

Why are PFAS a growing compliance and liability concern for industries?

For industrial operations, the presence of PFAS in lubricants can lead to serious compliance and liability issues. Contaminated waste streams, workplace exposure, and the potential for environmental release put organisations at risk. Not only from a safety and health perspective but also legally and reputationally.

Regulatory pressure is intensifying. In the EU, PFAS are being phased out under REACH and monitored by the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA). In the United States, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is expanding oversight under TSCA. Many jurisdictions are introducing outright bans or severe restrictions.

A safer path forward

To reduce risk and future-proof operations, companies must pivot to safer alternatives. Interflon is leading the way by offering high-performance, PFAS-free lubricants that meet strict regulatory standards while delivering excellent results. Taking proactive steps today protects your workforce, reputation, and bottom line tomorrow.
