Addressing bearing issues on golf course mowers

A local golf club with its own team of greenkeepers and maintenance staff, faced recurring challenges with bearing failures on their fleet of mowers. The Toro 5410 fairway mower, Toro 3500D rotary mower (or semi-rough areas), and Eclipse 322 electric mower (for greens, approaches, and tees) were particularly susceptible to damage caused by grass sap and dust. These contaminants, combined with wet and dusty conditions, allowed moisture and dirt to infiltrate the double-row ball bearings, accelerating wear and necessitating annual replacements. Despite trials with various lubricants, the club struggled to find a solution that adequately protected the bearings.

Our solution

We recommended Interflon Grease HD2 with MicPol® technology. This innovative technology enhances the grease's intrinsic properties, ensuring exceptional adhesion and durability. The result: reduced wear and extended bearing lifespan.

The result

  • Reduced bearing replacements: A five-fold decrease in bearing replacements due to superior protection against moisture and dirt.
  • Enhanced lubricant adhesion: Improved adhesion prevents grease clumps on fairways and greens, maintaining pristine course conditions.
  • Cost savings: Reduced annual maintenance costs and increased operational efficiency.
  • Optimized greenkeeping time: Less downtime for maintenance, allowing greenkeepers to allocate more time to essential course care.

By transitioning to Interflon Grease HD2, the golf club has achieved a sustainable solution that thrives in challenging wet and dusty conditions and hasn't had to replace bearings in five years. A simple annual maintenance routine involving disassembly and regreasing of the cutting reel ensures optimal bearing protection and minimal wear. This has yielded substantial cost savings, estimated at €1,500 annually, representing a significant portion of the club's €14,000 annual maintenance budget.
