Extending the lifespan of zinc-coated wire ropes fourfold

Zinc-coated wire ropes

Initial situation

A customer was using zinc-coated wire ropes in a dusty steel mill environment. The ropes, carrying loads of approx. 2 tons, were bent every 20 - 25 cm and were wearing out quickly. This led to a high monthly consumption rate of around 80 pieces.

Our solution

We recommended Interflon Lube EP, a high-performance lubricant for long lasting protection against corrosion and wear at extreme pressure.

First, we removed old grease from the wire ropes using Interflon Degreaser EM30+.

Next, we applied Interflon Lube EP three times, with 40-minute intervals between applications to ensure the product dried effectively. The customer used these wire ropes alongside other new ropes that were lubricated with graphite oil.

Result

After two weeks of testing, the customer found that the wire ropes lubricated with Interflon Lube EP looked significantly less worn than the ropes lubricated with graphite oil.

The customer continued to use the Interflon Lube EP-lubricated ropes for several months, and they found that their lifespan was four times longer than the lifespan of the graphite oil-lubricated ropes. This resulted in monthly savings of €2,160.

Conclusion

Interflon Lube EP is an effective way to extend the lifespan of zinc-coated wire ropes and reduce maintenance costs. It is a cost-effective solution that can be easily applied by any maintenance team.
