How to lubricate and care for your new chain

5 Steps to get the most out of your new chain

Updated on 28/11/2023

You've just invested a significant amount of money on a new drive chain. This replacement was necessary because your old chain has stretched to nearly 102% percent of its original length. (Chains don't actually stretch, but they do appear to get longer. Read this article to learn why.) Once a chain reaches 3% elongation, or preferably slightly before, it's time for a replacement.

Maximizing chain life

How can you ensure you get the most out of your new chain and extend its lifespan? Interflon's extensive experience in this field has enabled us to help clients double, and often triple, the lifespan of their chains. Instead of replacing your chain every three to four months, you could get six to eight months, or even longer, by following our recommendations. Additionally, you'll save on lubricant and labour costs associated with chain maintenance.

Initial chain care

Upon receiving a new chain, even before installing it, it's crucial to take preventive measures to safeguard your investment. Here are five essential steps to ensure optimal chain performance and longevity:

1. Clean the chain: Immerse the new chain in a high-quality cleaner like Interflon Degreaser EM30+ to remove any protective coating. The factory coating on new chains is primarily meant for protection during shipping, not for actual use. It's often a wax coating that doesn't provide the long-lasting protection of an Interflon lubricant. Removing this coating ensures the lubricant penetrates deep into the chain, preventing metal-to-metal contact.

2. Dry the chain thoroughly: After cleaning, use compressed air to remove any remaining cleaning residue or contaminants that could hinder the lubricant's effectiveness.

3. Apply appropriate lubricant: Apply the lubricant specifically designed for the chain's intended application, even if it's not being installed immediately. This will protect the chain during storage and ensure it's ready for use when needed.

4. Allow the chain to dry naturally: Avoid using forced air to dry the lubricant. Instead, allow the Interflon lubricant with MicPol® to penetrate all pins, bushings, and rollers through capillary action.

5. Store the lubricated chain: Store the lubricated chain properly to prevent corrosion before installation.

Pro tip: Always maintain a lubricant coating on the chain, even when not in use. The right lubricant will provide optimal protection and extend chain life.
