Corrugated cardboard is one of the most-used packaging materials, and is practically ubiquitous in the packaging world. It is a natural product, recyclable and biodegradable. It offers the ability to adapt to every type of product, allowing packaging manufacturers to produce tailor-made solutions for their clients.

Because so much paper dust is generated during the process, and because of the high temperatures and pressures involved, lubricants need to be up to the challenge. Interflon excels in providing high-performance lubrication for every step of the corrugated cardboard manufacturing process.

1. Corrugator

These are used at companies that manufacture cardboard. Most companies in this industry buy corrugated board from manufacturers and transform the cardboard to a carton. There are actually many different types of corrugated cardboard, and they depend of course on the type of corrugator used to make them.

The corrugator consists of two sections: the wet section and the dry section. At the corrugator group, heat is obtained through steam. This allows the board to be shaped to the desired corrugation. Temperatures of 250°C (480°F) can be reached.

Once the board has left the corrugator group, it passes through a roller that places glue on each side and then places a sheet of paper atop the glue. Then it passes through another table, where the board is pressed and the glue is allowed to dry. Finally, the board passes through a die cutter that cuts the sheets to size.

Interflon Lubricants for Corrugation Machines

Interflon Lube HT

Interflon Lube HT is a dry, long-lasting high-temperature lubricant for chains. It minimizes or prevents dripping, therefore avoiding contamination of the cardboard. It can also be applied to cutter knives to extend their service life.

Interflon Grease HTG

Use Interflon Grease HTG to grease the bearings of the corrugator groups, thus extending the greasing intervals, increasing their reliability, and extending their service life.

Interflon Grease HD2

Interflon Grease HD2 is ideal for greasing the bearings in the wet, hot vapor/steam section of the corrugator.

2. Feeder

The feeder consists of a few rollers moved by a drive chain. That chain is moved by a gear reducer motor. These are situation atop the plates of the carton board, connected to the second section of the feeder, which catches packs of corrugated sheets and delivers the sheets one by one to the machine.

All these moving pieces--rollers, drive chain, gear reducer, and every other moving part--is prone to gathering paper dust. Applications of Interflon lubricant will greatly reduce friction, thereby allowing savings in energy, replacement, and maintenance costs.

Interflon Lubricants for Feeder

Interflon Lube TF

Lube TF provides a dry, long-lasting lubrication to the drive chains. It will not drip, and thanks to MicPol® technology it will far outlast our competitors' products. Look forward to increasing your chain life by amounts you never thought possible!

Interflon Grease MP2/3

Interflon Grease MP2/3 is ideal for greasing the bearings. This will provide longer greasing intervals, thanks to the fact that the grease will not become contaminated by cardboard dust.

3. Slotter

A slotter consists of three machines: a printing machine, a die cutter, and a folder/glue station. Here we treat the die-cutter, which is also a groover. The circular or semi-circular knives are mounted on rollers. These cut the boards to their desired size, or make the folding or grooving.

Below is a video of a die-cutting machine much like the ones Interflon works with on a regular basis:

Lubricating Slotters, Die Cutters, and Folders

Interflon Lube TF

To dry-lubricate the roller knife holders where carton dust adheres, and makes it difficult to adjust the knives, which in turn suffer from stick-slip. The knife blades themselves can be lubricated with Lube TF to extend their life and to prolong service intervals. Lube TF is also suitable for use on chains, which are vulnerable to the same carton dust.

Interflon Grease MP2/3

Use Grease MP2/3 to grease the bearings in order to obtain longer greasing intervals. This is thanks to the fact that the grease will not become contaminated by cardboard dust.

4. Printing Presses

There are two common types of printing processes: offset and flexography. The most common is flexography.

Flexographic printing is done through plates mounted on rollers. These plates come into contact with another roller dipped in ink, and they print the desired design on the board sheet.

Interflon Lubricants for Printing Presses

Interflon Lube TF

Dry, long-lasting lubricant for chains suffering from carton dust.

Interflon Grease MP2/3

To grease the bearings and provide longer greasing intervals, thanks to the fact that the grease does not get contaminated and the cardboard dust will not harden the grease.

Interflon Food Lube G

Food Lube G (which derives its name from the fact that it is a food-safe lubricant, ideal for use in environments requiring NSF H1 lubricants) is ideal for central lubrication, resulting in less oil consumption

5. Die Cutter

The die cutter has to make the necessary handles and grooves in each box. These are what make folding possible. There are two types of die cutting: plane die cutting and rotary die cutting.

Plane die cutting happens at slow speed, and the dies suffer a great deal from the high pressure (from 50 to 550 tons). It's done on a metal table, and is suitable only for the production of small boxes.

Rotary die cutting happens at high speed. Dies tend to last longer because there is much less pressure on them.

The die cutter is mounted on top of the die cutter station. Once the cardboard sheet arrives at this station, the sheet is pressed against the bottom plate at a pressure between 50 and 550 tons, depending on the size and type of knives the die cutter is equipped with. In a rotary die cutter, the sheets pass under a roller that has a die cutter. The die cutter is composed of wooden shingles on which cutting knives and rubber are mounted.

Lubrication of Die Cutters

Interflon Lube TF

Dry, long-lasting lubricant for chains suffering from carton dust. Also can be applied to the roller to prevent dust from sticking to it.

Interflon Grease MP2/3

Grease MP2/3 is ideal for greasing bearings. It will allow for longer greasing intervals, thanks to the fact that the grease does not become contaminated and cardboard dust will not harden the grease.

6. Folder/Gluer

The cardboard sheet has now been printed, cut, and grooved. Now it passes through a folding machine. It is moved by belts that rest on bearings, following guides that do the folding. Before being folded completely, flue is applied to one side, so that at the end of the folding process, the cardboard box is finished.

Interflon Lubricants for the Folder/Gluer Machine

Interflon Lube TF

Dry, long-lasting lubricant for chains suffering from carton dust. Also can be applied to the roller to prevent dust from sticking to it.

Interflon Grease MP2/3

Grease MP2/3 is ideal for greasing bearings. It will allow for longer greasing intervals, thanks to the fact that the grease does not become contaminated and cardboard dust will not harden the grease.

Interflon Fin Grease

Use Interflon Fin Grease to grease the large number of closed bearings that help to move the belts. It penetrates and extends the service life of these bearings enormously. This is a grease version of our very popular Fin Super, which becomes a dry film after application.

Interflon Slide Wax

Interflon Slide Wax is for the guides of the folding machine. It's completely dry, will not stain, and lasts up to 10x longer than silicon spray.

7. Transfer

The transfer section is the last part of the process, where the finished boxes are transported to the warehouse, or put on a truck to be sent to the client. It may involve an intelligent warehouse system, with various automated tracks that move the goods from one track to another. These transport systems are driven by rollers or chains.

Interflon Lubricants for Transferring Process

Interflon Lube TF

Dry lubrication is very important for transport chains. Otherwise, the finished boxes could be stained.

Interflon Grease MP2/3

Grease MP2/3 is ideal for greasing bearings. It will allow for longer greasing intervals, thanks to the fact that the grease does not become contaminated and cardboard dust will not harden the grease.
