Less friction, lower maintenance costs, higher output, simpler compliance

MicPol® technology

What does MicPol® technology do for you?

  • Minimal metal-to-metal contact: lower friction and wear, fewer unplanned stops, lower energy consumption and CO₂ emissions.
  • Longer lubricant life: longer lubrication intervals, less lubricant consumed and less time spent on lubrication tasks.
  • Reliable protection at start-up, during stop-start operation and under variable loads: longer component life and higher equipment availability.
  • A bonded tribofilm that resists water wash-out and shields the surface from contaminants: better corrosion protection and fewer contamination-related stoppages.
  • Free from PFAS, PTFE, microplastics, silicones, nanomaterials and substances on the REACH SVHC candidate list: simpler compliance. Interflon lubricants with MicPol® technology contain none of these substances, including nanomaterials as defined by the EU. Declarations are available for your audits.

What is MicPol® technology?

MicPol® technology is Interflon’s proprietary lubrication technology. It enhances the properties of Interflon lubricants and is developed to reduce friction and keep metal-to-metal contact to a minimum throughout the entire lubrication interval.

How does MicPol® technology work?

MicPol® technology combines two inseparable principles:

Micronisation reduces Interflon’s proprietary additives to an ultra-fine size, so they reach the entire contact surface and settle into its microscopic irregularities, lowering the effective surface roughness.

Polarisation makes the micronised additives and part of the base oil adhere strongly to metal, so the lubricant stays where it is needed, even under harsh conditions.

Through alignment, netting and anchoring, the micronised and polarised functional components form a smooth tribofilm bonded to the metal surface. It stays in place under high loads, high shear and in corrosive environments, and resists being pushed out of the contact zone. This keeps friction low, right where it matters most.

How do you know it works in your plant?

Results depend on the application, the load and the operating conditions. An Interflon Technical Advisor assesses your lubrication points, selects the right product and interval, and documents the baseline, so that the effect on intervals, consumption and downtime can be measured rather than assumed.

Frequently Asked Questions

MicPol® technology does not contain PFAS/PTFE, nano-materials, silicones or SVHCs (Substances of very High Concern).

Furthermore Interflon strives to only produce products that are not classified according to GHS/CLP, and that are “label-free”.

Inadequate lubrication can increase friction, accelerate component wear and contribute to unplanned equipment downtime.

MicPol® technology helps address these risks by forming a durable, friction-reducing tribofilm that adheres strongly to metal surfaces. This supports consistent surface protection, even under demanding operating conditions.

Combined with correct lubricant selection and maintenance practices, MicPol® technology can help improve equipment reliability and reduce lubrication-related maintenance interventions.

Friction between moving components increases energy demand and generates heat, reducing the efficiency of mechanical systems.

MicPol® technology helps reduce friction by forming a durable, low-friction tribofilm on metal surfaces. By supporting smoother movement and reducing friction-related energy losses, it can help improve mechanical efficiency and lower energy consumption.

Actual energy savings depend on the equipment, operating conditions and lubrication practices.

  • A lubricant film is the layer of lubricant that separates moving surfaces and helps reduce direct metal-to-metal contact. Its main function is to carry load, reduce friction and support smooth movement between components.
  • A tribofilm is a surface-bound film formed at the lubricated contact zone. It helps reduce friction where surfaces interact, protects against wear and helps the lubricant perform more consistently under changing operating conditions. Because it is bound to the surface, it can provide protection even in areas where the lubricant film becomes very thin.
  • MicPol® technology helps functional components reach the relevant contact zones, including surface irregularities and hard-to-reach contact areas. There, they form a stable, surface-bound tribofilm that supports durable friction reduction and long-term component protection.

In simple terms: the lubricant film works between the surfaces, while the tribofilm is bound to the surface.

Shear is the mechanical stress a lubricant undergoes when surfaces move against each other. The lubricant gets worked, squeezed, and pushed through the contact zone. This can increase friction, generate heat, and reduce viscosity. Especially under heavy loads, high speeds, or high temperatures.

Interflon’s MicPol® technology reduces the effects of shear on the lubricant itself, as well as on the lubricated surfaces, by forming a friction-reducing tribofilm that adheres strongly to the surface and remains effective under shear-related operating conditions.

MicPol® technology helps functional components reach the relevant contact zones, including surface irregularities and hard-to-reach contact areas, where they form a stable tribofilm on the metal surface. This surface-bound film reduces friction, supports smoother operation and helps protect components over the long term.

  • Alignment: The functional components orient themselves at the lubricated surface instead of remaining randomly dispersed in the lubricant. This ordered positioning helps them cover the surface consistently, forming the basis for an effective tribofilm.
  • Netting: Once aligned, these components connect and support each other, forming a coherent tribofilm over the lubricated surface. This helps create a continuous protective structure rather than separate, isolated effects.
  • Anchoring: Through polarisation, the tribofilm adheres strongly to the metal surface and remains bound to the contact zone. This helps it resist disruption by moisture and stay in place under load, changing speeds and stop-start movement, providing durable friction reduction and long-term protection.

PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene), a fluoropolymer belonging to the PFAS family, is most commonly used as a lubricant additive to reduce friction and wear.

MicPol® technology goes one step further. It takes a wider approach to both reduce friction to an absolute minimum, as well as to optimise the overall protection qualities of a lubricant. Through micronisation and polarisation, functional components form a stable, durable tribofilm that adheres strongly to metal surfaces. This improves wear protection, supports energy efficiency and contributes to longer-lasting lubrication performance. MicPol® technology therefore offers a high-performance, PFAS-free approach to lubrication, combining effective friction reduction with improved protection and lubricant longevity.
