MicPol® technology
What are the benefits of MicPol® technology?
MicPol® technology delivers results that are practical and measurable:
- Consistently low friction across a wide range of speeds and load conditions reduces energy consumption, CO₂ emissions, premature wear, and unplanned downtime, directly lowering operational costs, increasing output, and reducing the environmental impact.
- Extended lubrication intervals reduce the time spent on lubrication tasks and lower lubricant consumption, reducing lubrication-related costs, even when the availability of skilled technical staff is under pressure.
- Reliable wear protection during start-up, stop-start operations, and variable load conditions reduces metal-to-metal contact to a minimum, extends lubricant and component service life, and maximises equipment availability.
- MicPol® technology limits the harmful effects of water, dust, and dirt, enhancing corrosion protection, reducing contamination-related wear, and contributing to cleaner, safer working conditions and more consistent output and quality.
- Interflon lubricants and MicPol® technology are free from PFAS, PTFE, microplastics, silicones, nanomaterials, and SVHCs, simplifying compliance and audit-readiness, and helping organisations meet the most stringent regulatory and sustainability requirements.
MicPol® technology reduces maintenance costs, maximises output and brings compliance within reach.
What is MicPol® technology?
MicPol® technology is Interflon's proprietary lubrication technology that enhances the overall properties of Interflon lubricants. It is specifically developed to actively reduce friction between moving parts to the lowest possible level. Our in-house Research & Development team continues to refine MicPol® technology.
What is MicPol® technology based on?
MicPol® technology is based on two inseparably connected principles: micronisation and polarisation.
Through micronisation, Interflon's proprietary additives are reduced and dispersed to an ultra-fine size. This enables them to reach the full surface of the component, including difficult-to-access areas as well as the microscopic irregularities of surfaces, reducing surface roughness to a minimum.
Through polarisation, these additives and part of the base oil adhere strongly to metal, enhancing film strength and the protection of metal surfaces. Together, they optimise the protection of the lubricated surfaces, even under demanding conditions such as high loads, high shear, and in corrosive environments.
How does MicPol® technology work?
MicPol® technology ensures the lubricant reaches the right areas. Then, by a unique process of alignment, netting, and anchoring, the micronised and polarised additives form a resilient tribofilm (a thin, protective layer bonded directly to the surface) that actively reduces friction.
This protective film is extremely smooth due to the alignment of the micronised additives along the surface. A surface-bound, polarised network holds the tribofilm firmly in place, making it resistant to shear and push-out, enabling long-lasting protection right where it is needed most.
Frequently Asked Questions
MicPol® technology does not contain PFAS/PTFE, nano-materials, silicones or SVHCs (Substances of very High Concern).
Furthermore Interflon strives to only produce products that are not classified according to GHS/CLP, and that are “label-free”.
Excessive friction and wear are major contributors to premature component failure, unexpected breakdowns and costly equipment downtime.
MicPol® technology tackles these challenges at their source. By forming a stable, strongly adhering tribofilm, it minimises friction and wear, even under demanding operating conditions. This extends component life, improves equipment reliability and reduces the risk of unexpected failures. Its long-lasting lubrication performance also enables extended relubrication intervals, reducing maintenance interventions. The result is more reliable equipment, fewer lubrication-related interruptions and increased overall equipment efficiency and availability.
Friction between moving components generates heat and causes energy losses, reducing the efficiency of mechanical systems.
MicPol® technology helps reduce friction by forming a stable, durable tribofilm on metal surfaces. By reducing friction-related energy losses, even under demanding operating conditions, it helps improve mechanical efficiency and lowers energy consumption.
Actual energy savings depend on the application, operating conditions and lubrication regime.
- A lubricant film is the layer of lubricant that separates moving surfaces and helps reduce direct metal-to-metal contact. Its main function is to carry load, reduce friction and support smooth movement between components.
- A tribofilm is a surface-bound film formed at the lubricated contact zone. It helps reduce friction where surfaces interact, protects against wear and helps the lubricant perform more consistently under changing operating conditions. Because it is bound to the surface, it can provide protection even in areas where the lubricant film becomes very thin.
- MicPol® technology helps functional components reach the relevant contact zones, including surface irregularities and hard-to-reach contact areas. There, they form a stable, surface-bound tribofilm that supports durable friction reduction and long-term component protection.
In simple terms: the lubricant film works between the surfaces, while the tribofilm is bound to the surface.
Shear is the mechanical stress a lubricant undergoes when surfaces move against each other. The lubricant gets worked, squeezed, and pushed through the contact zone. This can increase friction, generate heat, and reduce viscosity, especially under heavy loads, high speeds, or high temperatures.
Interflon’s MicPol® technology reduces the effects of shear on the lubricant itself, as well as on the lubricated surfaces, by forming a friction-reducing tribofilm that adheres strongly to the surface and remains effective under shear-related operating conditions.
MicPol® technology helps functional components reach the relevant contact zones, including surface irregularities and hard-to-reach contact areas, where they form a stable tribofilm on the metal surface. This surface-bound film reduces friction, supports smoother operation and helps protect components over the long term.
- Alignment: The functional components orient themselves at the lubricated surface instead of remaining randomly dispersed in the lubricant. This ordered positioning helps them cover the surface consistently, forming the basis for an effective tribofilm.
- Netting: Once aligned, these components connect and support each other, forming a coherent tribofilm over the lubricated surface. This helps create a continuous protective structure rather than separate, isolated effects.
- Anchoring: Through polarisation, the tribofilm adheres strongly to the metal surface and remains bound to the contact zone. This helps it resist disruption by moisture and stay in place under load, changing speeds and stop-start movement, providing durable friction reduction and long-term protection.
PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene), a fluoropolymer belonging to the PFAS family, is most commonly used as a lubricant additive to reduce friction and wear.
MicPol® technology goes one step further. It takes a wider approach to both reduce friction to an absolute minimum, as well as to optimise the overall protection qualities of a lubricant. Through micronisation and polarisation, functional components form a stable, durable tribofilm that adheres strongly to metal surfaces. This improves wear protection, supports energy efficiency and contributes to longer-lasting lubrication performance. MicPol® technology therefore offers a high-performance, PFAS-free approach to lubrication, combining effective friction reduction with improved protection and lubricant longevity.
