Tackling contamination, wear and costs in milling machine bearings

Initial situation

A manufacturer operates three milling machines, each equipped with five bearings. These 15 bearings were lubricated with conventional grease in an environment heavily contaminated with dust and metal chippings. The grease was easily displaced, requiring reapplication approximately every two days. Insufficient lubrication increased friction and wear, leading to the need to overhaul each milling machine every 30 months at a cost of €20,000 per machine, a total of €60,000 for all three machines.

Objectives

  • Improved resistance to moisture and contamination
  • Extended lubrication intervals
  • Reduced wear
  • Lower overhaul costs

Interflon solution

Interflon Grease LS1/2 with MicPol® technology, high-performance, PFAS-free grease.

Results

By switching to Interflon Grease LS1/2, the following improvements were achieved:

  • Increased resistance to moisture and contamination
  • Extended lubrication intervals
  • Reduced wear
  • Significant reduction in grease consumption (from 143 litres/year to 20 litres/year)
  • Reduced time spent on lubrication (from 60 hours/year to 9 hours/year)
  • Longer intervals between overhauls (from every 3 years to every 4 years)
  • Total annual savings: €16,223.59
